sshfs "remote host has disconnected" errors

When mounting a remote directory with sshfs it can give the error:

remote host has disconnected

I just spent a while dealing with this and it turns out that it was caused by the server not supporting sftp. It's not clear from most of the documentation I've seen, but sshfs relies on sftp. I'm guessing that sftp is set up by default on most ssh servers, but it was misconfigured on mine. (The Subsystem sftp line in my /etc/sshd_config was pointing to the wrong location.) If you're seeing the "remote host has disconnected" error, take a look at your ssh server's sftp configuration.
