Linux Installation

1999-07-27 01:00:00 UTC

If this works it'll be the first proper bit of work I've done on Linux since installing it on Saturday. I've mounted one of my dos partitions and I've opened this file from there. I'm editing it in KEdit under KDE. I'll probably have to upload using Netscape because I haven't found a proper ftp program yet. I'm sure there's one here, I just haven't found it yet. Mp3s by Elleinad are being played by X11Amp.

The main reason I didn't get round to writing this earlier is the fact that KDE and Gnome both come with a cool selection of games and screensavers. This is a blessing and a curse.

I was using Gnome for the first few days but it's still rather buggy and it crashed a while ago and I haven't been able to get into it since. Still, it does look good and when it's a bit more stable I might start using it again.

Overall I'm very happy with linux. Though I've seen a few things that annoy me I have yet to encounter anything that disgusts me, which I do regularly with Windows. There's even a command-line interface that's a pleasure to use. When was the last time you thought that of dos?

I do wonder, though, whether a multi-user OS such as this is perhaps overkill for a desktop machine...

Perhaps, but what the hell...
