Patent-Free Audio Compression

As you are probably already aware, patents and other forms of intellectual property are of great concern to me, and music is one of my passions. Therefore it is only fitting that I should be interested in Mark Taylor's proposal for the creation of a patent-free audio compression format. (Taylor is the maintainer of LAME.) The situation with patents on mp3 is pretty bad, and it seems like there would be a lot of difficulties in creating a unpatented format.
