Sure There Were Stars

Sure there were stars

I saw them all

Gaped at the magnitude of them

Shivered a little at the many

Impossible to count them.

I tried to pull them down

Squeeze them tight

And hold them in my hand

Before her face

And see her swoon.

But my grinning face

Was stuck behind them

And I could not reach

To pull it down

Grief teared my eyes.

I turned my head and looked.

There in her eyes were

All the stars, the velvet

Of the sky.  My grinning face

Had gone.  She smiled.
