Each Last Year’s Leaf
Each last year’s leaf that still
Stubbornly stood its ground
And died in dignity on the branch
Died not colourless.
The dot of life it held, greened
Its centre — its edges worn, in gold and purple —
Weathered the wind and stood the snow
Until the bud had burst beside it.
