The Butterfly
More elusive than the mouse scratching,
Its dusty wings dragging on the wheat,
Dried seeds of honesty and cow parsley,
The tortoise-shell butterfly mistaking
December’s indoor heat for spring
Lives a twilight life on the window sill,
And is my companion in colour
Against the fog and rain.
